Sodus Valedictorian Sarah DeFeo

Valedictorian Sarah DeFeo
Sarah-Laurel DeFeo has earned the top spot of the Sodus Central School Class of 2010. She is the daughter of Lisamarie, who has stayed at home to raise her children and Paul DeFeo, a retired engineer who previously worked at Xerox Corporation. Sarah-Laurel has one younger sister, Lilliannah, who is 12 years old.
Sarah-Laurel has lived in Sodus all her life living in the Village of Sodus Point, and started out her education at SCS in kindergarten. She is finishing up her high school career with an amazing 99.37 GPA…and she hasn’t just taken the easy subjects; when Sarah-Laurel accepts her diploma on Saturday morning, she will have already completed 13 college courses. Next fall Sarah-Laurel will be attending the University of Rochester with plans to major in Anthropology with thoughts of a future in Forensic Anthropology.
Even though her main focus has been on academics, that hasn’t interfered with DeFoe’s participation in music. She participated in band and jazz band all four years; she’s an alto saxophonist. Sarah-Laurel participated in high school musicals all four years in the pit band. She was a member of the First Choir, and was inducted into the National Honor Society as a junior. During her sophomore and junior years, DeFoe received a scholarship and attended the Eastman Community School of Music.
There are two teachers at SCS that have stood out in Sarah-Laurel’s mind. Mr. White, her 10th grade math teacher “he was just a really great teacher; he was a good listener and gave me excellent advice.”  Mr. Campbell, DeFoe’s Human Biology teacher, was also noted “his classes were just a ton of fun and he is another really good teacher.”
Prior to the commencement ceremony, Sarah-Laurel has already been awarded seven academic awards: Scholastic Excellence Award; Presidential Award for Educational Excellence, DAR American History Award, Wolcott Elks Award, Alice Ingison Scholarship, and the Lions Club Scholarship. In addition, the University of Rochester has presented her with a Dean’s Scholarship.
As Valedictorian of the Class of 2010, DeFoe will be remembering things in her life, and that of her classmates that are very important to her.
Most important to her is the support that she has received from her parents and Sarah-Laurel wanted to make sure that they knew how grateful she was for everything that they do for her.
Sarah-Laurel has wonderful memories of growing up in Sodus and indicated how much she has enjoyed living in Sodus Point; what a wonderful community it is; and that there is always something going on there.
